Trey Songz believes It's Cool To Be Smart!
During the month of March, teens selected from Boys & Girls Clubs and the Music Mentor program in collaboration with Atlantic Records and It's Cool To Be Smart had the opportunity to be up close and personal with Atlantic recording R&B artist and "Hearth Throb" Trey Songz who's currently touring with Capitol Records artist J Holiday. The tour kicked off in February and is scheduled to run through March.

In late February, It's Cool To Be Smart was approached by Sydney Margetson, VP of Publicity for Atlantic Records with a wonderful opportunity for teens to participate with the tour and make their dreams come true by meeting Trey Songz. Teens were chosen to attend the concert by their Club Directors from Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and New Orleans with current Music Mentees and Mentors from the It's Cool To Be Smart organization. "We wish there were more Record Executives like Mr. Margetson who over the years has committed to making sure the artists support their communities and give back a portion of their time for the youth", stated Curtis B., Executive Director of It's Cool To Be Smart.
Other Atlantic recording artists have supported the organization including T.I., Yolanda Adams, Keke Palmer, Juvenile, Sean Paul and the late Gerald Levert.

Atlantic Records R&B artist to perform at East Carolina University Homecoming concert on Saturday
Event aimed to keep students engaged in activities on campus Kimberly Bellamy, News Editor, The East Carolinian Issue date: 10/25/07 Trey Songz, Atlantic Records R&B artist, will perform at Wright Auditorium on Saturday at 8 p.m. Black Student Union (BSU) and Muchismo Entertainment are sponsoring the event. Belonging to Muchismo Entertainment are two Pirates that have contributed to organizing this event: Recardo Tucker, senior industrial technology major and Kevin Faison, alumni of ECU. The idea of bringing this artist to ECU stemmed form two main factors about homecoming that that the students felt should be changed. The concert's first objective is to give students entertainment at ECU for homecoming, instead of them having to go to other schools to enjoy homecoming festivities, according to Tucker. They were following the model of other schools that traditionally have concerts during their week of homecoming, according to Patrick Dixon, president of BSU. The second issue that encouraged the sponsors to have this concert is the intentions of the groups to create more events that promote more diversity and minority participation in Homecoming. "We both had a common goal to provide entertainment for homecoming for students that are interested in having a concert of the R&B/Hip Hop persuasion," Dixon said. BSU and Muschismo Entertainment have invested a lot of time into planning the concert. BSU has been planning the concert since August, according to Dixon. "We had been looking at artists since this summer," Dixon said. One of the factors that helped the sponsors decide which artist would perform at the concert was the newness of the artists' material. "We knew that his album was coming out a few weeks before the event and thought that he [Trey Songz] would be a good fit," Dixon said. The entertainer has released two albums, I Gotta Make It and Tre Day, both of which peaked at positions within the top ten on the R&B/Hip Hop Album chart, according to the Billboard Web site. To find out more about the concert, students can contact Tucker at 252-347-1906 or at rst0215@ecu.edu. Students can purchase tickets at the Central Ticket Office of Mendenhall Student Center or at ecuarts.com. The tickets are $20 for students and $25 for non-students.

BET's 'Rap-It-Up' AIDS program visits Norfolk's Booker T.
By AMY JETER, The Virginian-Pilot © October 24, 2007 | Last updated 3:47 PM Oct. 24 NORFOLK Recording artists, a television personality and radio disc jockeys descended on Booker T. Washington High School this afternoon to talk about a serious topic: AIDS. Rhythm and blues singers Trey Songz and Sammie and Alesha Renee of Black Entertainment Television showed up, along with DJs from 103 Jamz (102.9 FM), health educators and others. They spoke to students about the disease and other social issues. The event was part of Rap-It-Up, an initiative by BET Networks and the Kaiser Family Foundation to address HIV/AIDS in the black community. Since the campaign began in 1998, workers have held forums for teenagers in more than 33 cities; managed a toll-free hotline, (866) RAPITUP; distributed information guides; and tested thousands for HIV.
