Why is it such a problem for females under 18 to listen Trey's Music

Does Trey's music really affect these teenage girls? Is he that inappropriate?

TREYZONELOVE_2's picture

I thinkthe only problem is that Trey is sex! And some parents may not like for their children to listen to that! Its not all he talks about, but the majority of his music is sexual! And that can be a probem when it comes to the parents.

TreysAngElyEz21's picture

to me i dont think it should be a problem it really is about abstinence whether or not the girl feels like the music she listens to is goin to have a great impact on her life. there are babies having babies so i dont feel like listening to Trey is goin to make them go out there and do something that they dont wont to do. parents do have a say on what they want their kids to listen to but they will do wat they want, if trey is one of the people they want to listen to then so be it at least he isnt speakin about killin people and loading glocks and all that jazz. so rather a teen listen to him sayin he invented sex then them goin out and tryin to reinvent it themselves.

@Mrs.TremaineAldonNeverson2010.......ITS GREAT TO HEAR YOU SAY YOU'RE BEING RAISED RIGHT AND YOU HAVE NEVER HAD SEX.DO CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO YOUR PARENTS AND KNOW THAT THEY WILL NEVER TELL YOU ANYTHING WRONG!!!!!!!!!! IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO HEAR TEENAGERS SAY THAT THEY ARE STILL VIRGINS AND HOW THEY ARE NOT INFLUENCED BY WHAT THEY HEAR OR SEE...THAT SHOWS LEADERSHIP

Mariama Neverson's picture

I agree @Mrs.TremaineAldonNeverson2010... i feel the same way

honestly i dont think so bcuz im a teenager myself and i have never had sex and i dont plan it anytime soon. see i am being raised right and i know better. so dont blame trey for what he sings about bcuz that what he do best. i listen to his music and i aint did nothin im not supposed to do.

@TRICIA....I MUST AGREE WIT YOU.COMMINICATION AND RULES ARE A MUST!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE CAN BE OUR KIDS FRIENDS AND PARENTS AS LONG AS THEY UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE(THTS MY OPINION) IN THE TWO!!!

@Lisaleigh30..."every" is a definitive word. Do you know for sure that "every" teenager experiences a sexual encounter by the age of 16? I didn't have my first sexual encounter until I was 17. No, I didn't have sex, but that was the 1st time someone tried to get sex from me. Prior to that I wasn't listening to sexual music, I wasn't surrounded by friends with only sex on their mind...I was on the cheerleading team & I went to church a lot. Guys flirted, but not on that level - so "every" is the wrong choice of word. Additionally, Trey alone does not influence our teenagers. Our society as a whole has bombarded this generation with sex & Trey is a part of that. Rather teenagers act on what they hear & see is evident by the statistics that @SShorty & I quoted below. It does have an impact on them "in general". STDs & pregnancies are higher for teenagers than previous years (other than the babyboomer era) & continue to get higher each year. I know this thread is about opinions, but now lets look at facts. The fact is...our teenagers are being impacted by sexual content. Now for those parents that talk to their teenagers - like @ros and explain to them what they're listening to, give them guidelines, and have that open dialogue with them, then that's the best parenting. Fact is our society is not about to censor sexual content over the years. It'll get more & more explicit as time goes on, so the best thing to do is to guide your child's decisions & lifestyle through open communication & rules.

Ladies, Ii think we need to consider that we are leaving in a society that has announce a legal of seventeen to have consentual sex and fifteen for approval for marriage by a legal guardian in certain states. We must also remember that in 1964 the legal age for adulthoold was fifteen, so the laws just really made eighteen a legal adult age in the late 60's so that means only two generations have past so we can not expect men or girls to start being cautious with sex. I believed in non pre-marital sex but lets face it, every teenager experience a sexual encounter of some kind by sixteen whether by choice or force, so trey songz nor other music has influence over a teenagers sexual drive, only the individual.

Great topic for discussion, folks.

I agree with what a few people have already said. No, Trey's music is definitely not for all ages, but of course, teens and even pre-teens are going to listen to his music regardless of whether they should or not. I think the problem really comes in when, as people mentioned, the parents are not playing an active role in helping their children understand the messages behind what they're are listening to. I think they are aspects of Trey's music that warrant explanation and open opportunities for parents to have conversations with their kids about their own values on sex and what they expect of their children. Though realistically, many parents may not really know content-wise what their kids are listening to (unless they do themselves).

The generations of teens and even children nowadays are definitely more sexualized than previous ones through songs, TV shows, movies, advertising and other forms of media. And though the risks could seem greater now (e.g., HIV), unfortunately young people aren't getting the proper comprehensive, medically accurate sex education they need to make smart decisions whether they decide to have sex or not. But I think it's difficult to say across the board that kids are not influenced by the sexual imagery and content they are exposed to because some are. And it's not necessarily that they have sex because they hear Trey talk about it, but that it just overall contributes to a culture that perpetuates that idea that sex is the expectation which can be negative. And I say all this as a graduate student who focuses on sexual and reproductive health education, so I'm not one who tries to deny sexuality as an integral part of our humanity or pretends that teens don't have sex (almost 50% have by the end of 12th grade).

@Mariama Neverson - sex was no where NEAR promoted as much as it is now. Can you find a video from the 80s or 90's that is more graphic than "I Invented Sex" or "Neighbors Know My Name" (as far as sexual content)? I can't think of any. When I was a teenager, I was hearing music by Another Bad Creation, The Boys, Kid -N- Play, Shai, Jodeci, etc. Music was more about love than sex or dancing. They talked about liking a girl.."Come & Talk to Me", "The Kissing Game", "If I Ever Fall In Love", "The Playground", etc. That's all we're saying...when groups/artists were talking more about love & other things, the pregnancy & STD rate was lower. Now they're talking about sex more & that has risen. Nevertheless, understand this - I still believe it's up to parents to decide what is suitable for their child. I just personally wouldn't subject my children to all of his music.

give trey some credit he is a safe sex advocate.... Store Run was all about safe sex he always mention magnums...Brand New had the wrapper in the video....

"teenagers now are just being introduced to these things at a younger age and parents are having less restrictions and rules, per say. if anything, teenagers are way LESS mature now than
before." - CoogiDown

^that reply for me, just hit da nail on the head

and to Ms. WhitneyDesiree
when does a piece of information become more than just an "opinion"?

when it is backed by statistics/facts, and experience...all of those

So while Coogi's reply might started out being her opinion, that opinion was turned into straight
facts when Tricia brought up her experience and those statistics...

and I'll just add a couple more stats lol

according to Nationmaster, the USA has the leading rate (52.1) of teenage pregnancies
with 1,671.63 births per 1 million people. Also, WomenIssues report that Nevada is the
state with the highest teenage pregnancy rate among girls aged 15-19

therefore, based on those statistics, Coogi's opinion becomes more of a fact than
just mere opinion...

@TreyFansDMN - there is no drama. I love this topic, so please don't feel bad about posting it. Remember - we're all just expressing our opinions (no one is right or wrong) - we just have different opinions. I respect your opinion just as much as I'm sure you respect mine.
@WhitneyDesiree' - I understand exactly what you're saying. I am glad that you are waiting. It's very doable if you put your mind to it, but I am going to encourage you that if you decide not to wait till marriage, don't let a man touch you without a condemn until you marry him. Finish school, get your career, get established & all that good stuff. Travel, party, live life...enjoy yourself so that when you do settle down & have a family that you do it without regret. I applaud you & even though I don't know you, I'm very proud of you.
@COOGIdown - before you respond to @WhitneyDesiree' - please remember that you are an adult & that she is a teenager (and if I may add - who I like very much :-)). I just ask that you speak to her as such. I love positivity & encouragement.

BUT I AGREE WIT U. & IAM 18 & I HAVE NEVER HAD SEXUAL EXPERIENCES OF ANY KIND...SO DATS PROBABLY Y I WUZ QUICK 2 JUMP 2 THE FACT DAT I DON'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH TEENAGERS LISTENING 2 HIS MUSIC BECUZ IT NEVER HAD AN IMPACT ON ME & SOMETIMES I QUESTION MYSELF WHETHER I SHOULD WAIT UNTIL IAM MARRIED BECUZ I KNOW HOW STD'S & PREGNANCIES R GOING AROUND & DAT MAKES ME NOT WANT 2 DO ANYTHING NO TIME SOONER...BUT MY OPINION IS MY OPINION & EVERY 1 IS NOT GOING 2 AGREE, & BUT THANKS 4 TELLING ME DAT IN A POSITIVE WAY BECUZ THERE R SOME PPL DAT DON'T THINK B4 THEY TYPE SOMETIN....&THEY JUST COME OFF AT U ANY WAY DAT THEY WANT 2!!!!!!!

TreyFansDMV's picture

I didnt mean to cause any drama about this topic im just curious....I think Trey's music is perfectly fine for all ages because i grew up on marvin gaye, r kelly, ect.... As long as parents are ok with it...it all up to the parents you have to teach them about sex not trey's music...

Tricia AKA @GimmeUnusual's picture

@COOGIdown - I agree with you 100%. Teenagers are being introduced to way more things now than when I was a teenager. I was still playing with barbie dolls at 13 years old. I didn't have my first real boyfriend until I was 16 & all we did was hugged & pecked...no french kissing. When I was 17 - that's when I was first exposed to sex (someone trying to get at me in that way), but because I wasn't listening to pornographic music all the time & sex all over the TV, then I wasn't pressured or curious yet. I waited till I was in college @ 19 yrs. old. @WhitneyDesiree' (hope I got your name right - don't want you offended) - remember, you are just one teenager out of the pack. You can be the exception to the rule, but as a woman who works in a women's department - hundreds & hundreds of teenagers come in every year with an STD and/or pregnancy. The numbers are appaling. I was conceived by a teenage mom. We all know so was Trey...times are much worse now. I pulled up some statistics for you. In 2005, 725,000 pregnancies in the U.S. were from teenagers (under the age of 20). In 2006, it was 750,000 & in 2007, the number rose again. This only includes births...there are more statistics on abortions. So after knowing these statistics & what I personally see each & every day - you can't convince me that most teenagers are not impressionable & that they should be listening to Trey's music. Yes, you could be the exception, but I'm most concerned about those who are not.

WhitneyDesiree''s picture

@COOGIDOWN (DABABYPHATGODESS)....UMMMM GIRLS ARE ALOT MORE MATURE DESE DAYS....DAT IS MY OPINION & U DO NOT HAVE 2 AGREE.....JUS BECUZ TEEMAGERS LISTEN 2 SEXUAL MUSIC DOES NOT MEAN THEY R GOING 2 GET INTRODUCED 2 ANYTHING....SO I THINK U R WRONG....& U SAID TREY'S MUSIC ISN'T APPROPRIATE FOR ALL CHILDREN YES I AGREE WIT DAT....BUT I WUZ TALKIN ABOUT THE TEENAGERS....CUZ I DO NOT SEE WAT'S WRONG WIT TEENAGERS LISTENING 2 HIS MUSIC....BUT I MEAN HEY DATS JUST MY OPINION LIKE I SAID.....& P.S...........I LIKE 4 MY NAME 2 SPELLED THE WAY IT WAS GIVEN 2 ME...PLEASE IF U R GOIN 2 DIRECT A COMMENT AT SOMEONE AT LEAST U CAN DO IS GET THERE NAME RIGHT....THANK U & IAM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im 17 and ive listened to trey for a long time, he does imply sex 24/7 and does encourage people to have sex LOL but thats why we love him. if you dont like his music dont listen to it because obviously you know whats coming in the songs.

Ariel @COOGIdown's picture

@WhitneeDesiree ... your comment about teenagers being more mature nowadays... HELL NAW. teenagers now are just being introduced to these things at a younger age and parents are having less restrictions and rules, per say. if anything, teenagers are way LESS mature now than before.

i just dont think its appropriate at all for children to listen to Trey. they still gone do it... like yall sayin. its still not right.

GREAT POINTS LADIES AND PARENTS DO NEED TO BE MORE INVOLVED.I SAID THT TO SAY THIS..... I HAVE AN 11YR OLD AND WE LISTEN TO TREY EVERY MORNING WHEN I TAKE HER TO SCHOOL.I'D MUCH RATHER HER HEAR IT FRM ME THAN SOMEWHERE ELSE.JUS AS I WOULD RATHER MY 22YR OLD TO SIT AT HM N DRINK THAN AT THE CLUB.OF COURSE THE BABY COULDNT ATTEND ONE OF HIS CONCERTS.SO, TRICIA CALL ME A BAD PARENT...LOL!!!!!! REAL TALK THOUGH..I REALLY WOULD RATHER HER HEAR IT FRM ME SO I CAN DO THE EXPLAININ THAN HER HEAR IT ELSEWHERE N SOMEONE ELSE EXPLAIN IT.

@Tricia LOL you are crazy girl calling that female @BiPolar! We need to be BFFS!

Mariama Neverson's picture

I've been listenin to Trey music since I was 12 13 I think...plus Trey is an advocate of safe sex he always talk about his magnums...I don't think it's fair to make his music 18 and over because why take away good music to a whole generation... All the old r&b singers were much sexual than Trey and we grew up listening to it... Don't censor his music...parents need to be more involved

WhitneyDesiree''s picture

BEFORE I TURNED 18 I WOULD LISTEN 2 MUSIC DAT WUZ WAY MORE SEXUAL DEN TREY'S MUSIC....& MY PARENTS DIDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM IT & NOWADAYS TEENS UNDER 18 R ALOT MORE MATURE AN LISTENING 2 EXPLICIT MUSIC DOESN'T PHASE DEM AT ALL.!!!!!!

Mz.2thick's picture

my mom doesnt have a problem with me listening to it. its just she tired of me listening to it all day everyday lbvs

Tricia AKA @GimmeUnusual's picture

@TreyFansDMV - I think in the long run it is up to the parents on what they allow their children to listen to. I personally wouldn't knowingly let my children listen to Trey until they were at least 16 years of age. Some parents do not know how to be parents. Had all parents known how to be parents, then we wouldn't need city curfews. As @BiPolar said, children are impressionable and Trey's songs are very sexual. I believe @TreysTeam should have restricted his concerts to 18 and up and maybe even this site because it gets very explicit at times. My mom wouldn't allow me to buy any CD's w/ explicit lyrics & I didn't go to my first concert until I was old enough to pay for it myself (in my 20's). I just hope & pray that you ladies that do listen to his music have the wisdom to discern what you hear and to make the appropriate decisions when it comes to your life & sex. I work in OB/GYN and a couple years ago we had to tell a 12 yr. old that she had HIV. She got it from an older man she was having sex with. I've seen countless 15 & 16 year olds diagnosed with it. It's no joke out here, so be knowledgable about your bodies and what you will and will not stand for. Always protect yourselves...either by being celebate or using condemns.
