April raised Tremaine on her own without any help from her son’s father. When her son would ask questions about his father she would always tell him that he left when he was young. As Tremaine grew older he no longer asked questions about him. Tremaine turned all of his attention to music and making something out of his life. Years later Tremaine became Trey Songz with the help of Troy Taylor.
At age 25, Trey is one of the greatest R&B singers of our generation. His success over the years was monumental. He went from the underdog to the top dog. However at times he still thinks about the man that walked out of his life. Why would his father not want to know him? Even with his success his father has not tried to contact him.
Troy: April, it’s about time we tell Trey the truth.
April: He can’t handle it! Why don’t you leave it alone?
Troy: He wants to know and lying to him isn’t going to change anything. I made a mistake but I tried to correct it.
April: How is Trey going to understand that his father left him yet he’s always been there for him?
Troy: Let me explain it to him.
April: You watched him grow up and helped him become the man he is. He loves you Troy but if you tell him that you’re his father he’s going to hate the both of us.
Troy: Trey is an adult. He will understand.
April: (Crying) That’s my baby and I don’t want him to feel anymore pain.
Troy: He’s our son and he’ll understand that we made bad decisions. I shouldn’t left you and you should of told him about me.
(Trey walks into the kitchen)
Trey: Good morning momma!
April: Good morning baby.
Troy: Hey Trey, how are you?
Trey: I’m fine Troy. I didn’t know we had a breakfast meeting this morning.
Troy: We don’t. I came by to talk to your mother about something.
(April runs out of the kitchen)
Trey: What’s wrong momma?
(Trey runs after April)
Troy contemplates whether he should tell his son the truth. It could make them closer or end the friendship that had developed over the years.
Troy: (Thinking to his self) Do I want to be his father or mentor? Why can’t I be both? Why did I leave them?
(Trey and April talking in her room)
Trey: What’s wrong momma?
April: I’m so sorry Tremaine.
Trey: Sorry for what?
April: (Crying) For lying to you for all of these years.
Trey: Lying about what momma?
April: Your father.
Trey: It’s ok. I know it hurts you to talk about him.
(Troy is standing in the doorway)
April: (Crying) Troy is your father.
Troy: I’m sorry Trey, we wanted to tell you.
(Trey is in shock and can’t speak)
April: Baby, are you ok?
Troy: I’m sorry I left you. I wasn’t in the right place at that times in my life to be starting a family. When I was ready it was too late. Your mother had moved on and you were growing up so fast.
Trey: I don’t believe this shit! Momma why didn’t you tell me?
April: When he started coming back around I told him to stay away from you. He came to one of your talent shows and thought you had potential. Troy said he could help you if you were interested in music. I only wanted what was best for you.
Trey: How was lying to me for 25 years what’s best for me?
Troy: We are so sorry. I just wanted to get to know you. Then I noticed you had this amazing talent. I thought the least I could do is help you make your dreams come true since I let you down as a father. Please forgive me.
Trey: So what you think I’m gonna call you daddy now? Fuck outta here!
April: Don’t talk to your father like that.
Troy: (Sigh) It’s ok. Trey, I know you’re mad and all of the frustration has to come out.
Trey: I’m gone. I don’t have time to deal with this bullshit!
April: Wait, baby don’t go! Stay here and calm down.
Trey: Momma I gotta go.
(Trey looks back at Troy and shakes his head)
Trey gets in his black Benz and speeds off down the street.
Trey: (Thinking to his self) How could Troy do that to me? I trusted him. He lied, my momma lied. Who can I trust?
Trey’s eyes become misty at these thoughts. He pulls over on the side of the road. He picks his blackberry up only to see a picture of him, his mother, and Troy at the BET Awards as his background. One tear falls and in a rage he throws his phone and it slides under the back seat. He wipes his eyes and takes a deep breath. His blackberry is ringing and he just looks in the rear view mirror at it.
His mother and Troy continues calling, his grandmother is leaving voice messages, Trey needs to get away. He’s driving around the city trying to make sense of what’s going on. His phone continues to ring then he hears a ringtone he hasn’t heard in over a year.
(Trey stops again and pulls into a gas station)
Trey: (Talking to his self) I need to talk to someone. I wonder if she’s home. She’s probably busy. I’ll call her back.
Trey reaches into the backseat and scrambles to find his phone.
Trey: (804) 323-7715…I hope she answers.
Voicemail: Hello, you’re reached Melody. I’m not in right now please leave your name, number, and a brief message and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Record your message after the beep.
Trey: Hey Mel, this is Trey I was returning your call. Call me back when you get this message.
(Trey hangs up and throws his blackberry into the passengers seat)
Trey doesn’t know what to do anymore. He stays there waiting for Melody to call back and after 10 minutes he leaves. He goes to the park where he used to play at as a kid. Trey slumps down on a bench and prays not to be noticed by anyone. He has so many thoughts racing though his mind and screaming fans demanding his attention would only make things worse. He looks around at how much everything has changed. He gets angry thinking about how his father never took him to the park. While he’s feeling sorry for his self a little girl runs by crying.
Trey: Sweetheart, what’s wrong with you?
(The little girl is crying so much that she can’t get her words out)
Trey: Come on now, it can’t be that bad. Tell me what’s the matter?
Little girl: (Crying) I can’t find my mommy!
Trey: Oh damn that is bad. When was the last time you saw her?
Little girl: She said she was going to get me a ice cream cone and never came back.
Trey: Well lets go ask the ice cream man then.
(Trey gets up and walks with the little girl over to the playground where the ice cream man is surrounded by little kids)
Little girl: I’m Amanda, what’s your name?
Trey: My name is Tremaine but everybody calls me Trey.
Amanda: Thank you for helping me Trey.
Trey: You’re welcome. How old are you?
Amanda: I’m 6 years old. I’ll be 7 in a few weeks.
Trey: Oh ok. What’s your mother’s name?
Amanda: My mommy’s name is Alyssa.
Trey: Do ya’ll live around here?
Amanda: Yeah not far from here. I love the swings so mommy always brings me here everyday after school.
(Trey became to reminisce about how his mother used to do the same thing)
Trey: That’s nice, your mom sounds like a great woman.
Amanda: Why were you by yourself in the park today?
Trey: I was trying to clear my mind.
Amanda: Of what?
Trey: Its too much for you to understand kid. Really its too much for me to understand as well.
Amanda: Oh I’m sorry. My mommy says talking about it always helps.
Trey: Well I lost my father a long time ago and he’s finally come back.
Amanda: That’s good. So why are you sad?
Trey: There is more to it than that.
Amanda: Oh I guess I don’t understand then.
(It gets quiet so Trey starts singing Love Lost to his self)
Amanda: Wow you can really sing!
Trey: Thanks, so I’ve been told. You’ve never heard of me?
Trey: I’m Trey Songz, the singer.
Trey: Wow well you’re young so that’s no surprise. Your mother probably knows who I am.
Trey: I grew up here & played at this same playground as a kid.
Amanda: If you are a famous singer, why are you here?
Trey: I like to come home every now & then.
(Trey and Amanda get closer to the ice cream man and notice a woman crying and questioning people.)
Trey: Is that your mom?
Amanda: Yes! Mommy!
(Amanda runs to her mother and squeezes her tight)
Alyssa: Amanda, where did you go? When I turned around you were gone. Don’t ever do that to me again, I was so worried.
Amanda: I’m sorry Mommy! I promise I won’t. Mommy this man helped me find you.
Alyssa: I’ve told you about talking to strangers.
Trey: Hi, I saw her crying and she looked lost. So I just helped.
Alyssa: (Screams) Oh my god! You’re Trey Songz! I love you!
Trey: Thanks. I gotta go now. Amanda be good & don’t scare your mother like that anymore.
(Trey tries to walk away but Alyssa grabs his arm)
Alyssa: Thank you for helping her. I don’t know what I would’ve done if something had happened to her.
Trey: Really it was no problem.
Alyssa: Would you like to join me for dinner tonight?
Trey: I would love to but I have to go.
Alyssa: Is there anything I can do for you to show my appreciation?
Trey: That’s not necessary.
(Alyssa stares Trey in his eyes and pulls him close)
Alyssa: (Whispers in Trey’s ear) Don’t you want me?
Trey: Your daughter is standing right there.
(Trey backs up with an uncomfortable look on his face)
Trey: I have to go.
(Trey walks back across the park to his car)
(Alyssa gets on the phone)
Alyssa: Hey girl, I just met Trey Songz and he was all over me.
Amanda: Mommy can we go now?
(Trey reaches for the door handle when his phone starts ringing. He immediately answers.)
Melody: Hey, how are you?
Trey: I need to see you.
Melody: I know, your mom told my mom. Where are you?
(Trey looks back and there is a crowd of screaming people running toward him)
Melody: Trey? Where are you?
Trey: I’m at the park but I gotta go.
Melody: Come to the house.
Trey: Ok I’m on my way.
Trey jumps into the car and speeds off before the people can reach him. He gets on the Interstate and drives to Melody’s house. As he approaches the security gate a guard stops him.
Guard: Excuse sir, is Ms. Carter expecting you?
Trey: Yes, I’m Tremaine Neverson.
Guard: Ok, go right in.
Trey: Thank you.
Guard: You’re welcome.
Trey follows the driveway up to the house and parks. He walks up to the door but before he can knock it flies open. Melody stands before Trey smiling with open arms. Her long onyx hair is pinned up showing her beautiful face. Her glasses magnifies her hazel eyes. She wraps her arms around Trey holding him while they talk. Her small frame presses against his while he inhales the sweet smell of her perfume.
Melody: Hey, sweetie. Are you ok?
Melody: Everything is going to be ok. I promise.
(Trey is squeezing her tight and his chin is resting on her forehead. He sighs hoping that she’s right.)
Melody: Come in and relax.
(Trey walks in looking around.)
Trey: Things have changed since the last time I was here.
Melody: Yeah, I wanted the house to have that feeling of home.
Trey: Your Grandmother would’ve loved to see the house this way.
(Trey takes Melody by the hand and leads her to the sofa.)
Trey: I know you miss your Grandmother and its hard being here without her.
Melody: You’re right but this isn’t about me. You were there when I needed you and I’m here now that you need me.
(Trey stares her up and down with a blank look on his face.)
Melody: So do you want to talk about it?
Trey: What is there to talk about? My momma and Troy lied to me and I’m just supposed to accept it.
Melody: They probably didn’t want to hurt you.
Trey: Its too late for that.
Melody: You’re mad but think about it, at least you had both of your parents. They have always been there and you turned out fine.
Trey: I am who I am because of a lie though.
Melody: That may be true but you are an amazing young man with a bright future. Don’t let this hold you down and ruin your relationship with your mother and Troy.
Trey: I don’t know.
(Melody thinking to herself)
I hate seeing Trey like this. A smile should always be on his face. His face… he’s so adorable. I wish he knew how much I care about him. I really love him.
Trey: What are you thinking about?
(Melody thinking to herself)
This is my chance to tell him.
Melody: (Sigh) Nothing. What are you thinking about?
Trey: Trying to figure out why you were staring at me like that.
Melody: (Looks down & turns red) I wasn’t.
Trey: You were and now you’re turning red. Tell me what’s up.
Melody: (Stares into Trey’s eyes and can’t say a word)
(Trey takes her hand and pulls her close.)
Trey: I’m sorry I don’t come around like I used to but I’m always thinking about you. You’re my best friend and the only person I can truly trust. You know I love you girl so don’t act like that.
(Melody thinking to herself)
That’s all I wanted to hear.
Melody: (Crying) I love you too Trey.
Trey: Don’t cry.
(Trey holds her in his arms and as they lay there together Melody slowly starts kissing him.)
Trey: Woah, what are you doing?
Melody: I thought you… I.
Trey: No, I love you as a friend.
Melody: Oh, how could I be so stupid?
Trey: Wait, look me and you have something special. We grew up together and no matter where I go I know I’ll always have you when I come back home. I don’t want anything to complicate what we have.
(Melody wipes the stream of tears from her face. Trey wraps his arms back around her trying to console her.)
(Trey thinking to his self)
Damn, another problem I gotta deal with. I knew she loved me but I would’ve never guessed she was in love with me. I can’t be with her because I’ll only end up hurting her.
(Melody thinking to herself)
Why does he ignore my love? I love him so much and he just brushes it off like nothing. He has women throwing themselves at him constantly but that can’t be what he really wants. He could have any girl he wants, he just doesn’t want me.
Trey: I’m sorry sweetheart, I just don’t wanna hurt you. I’d never forgive myself if that happened or we weren’t together anymore.
Trey: Are you ok?
Trey: Good. Now I gotta go.
Melody: Where are you going?
Trey: I need to clear my mind.
(Trey gets up and walks towards the door. Melody follows slowly behind.)
Trey: Bye Mel and don’t cry over me.
Melody: Goodbye Trey.
Trey kisses Melody on the forehead and leaves. He doesn’t know who else he can turn to so he goes to a small cafe. He finds a quiet booth in the back where no one will bother him.
(The waitress approaches Trey)
Waitress: Hello, may I take your order?
Trey: Yes, I would like…
Waitress: Wow, I guess its fate.
Trey: Excuse me?
Waitress: Its Alyssa, Amanda’s mom.
Trey: Oh ok.
Alyssa: So how may I help you?
Trey: I just want some coffee.
Alyssa: Coming right up.
(Trey sits there playing with his phone waiting for his coffee.)
(Alyssa brings the coffee and stands watching as Trey drinks it.)
Alyssa: Do you mind if I join you?
Trey: Aren’t you working?
Alyssa: My shift is over in 15 minutes.
Alyssa continues working then comes back to Trey’s table when she’s finished.
Trey: I really don’t feel like talking.
Alyssa: That’s fine because that’s not what I’m interested in.
(Trey thinking to myself)
I just wanna be by myself. Everywhere I turn there’s another problem. Plus I don’t wanna go home with her. I don’t even know her. I’m tired I just wanna go home but I can’t, can’t go to Mel’s either. I guess I’ll go to a hotel.
Alyssa: I want you and I think you want me too. Lets have a few drinks and see what happens.
Trey: Naw, I can’t do that.
Trey gets up and tries to leave but is feeling dizzy. He stumbles and reaches for a chair to regain his balance.
Trey: What did you do to me?
Alyssa: Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you.
Trey: Get away from me!
Trey reaches for his phone to call Melody but Alyssa grabbed it first. Trey manages to get to the parking before passing out. Alyssa went through his pockets and found his car keys. She put Trey in the passengers seat and took off into the night.
Alyssa opened the door swiftly to her apartment and dragged Trey in. She took him straight to her bedroom to avoid waking Amanda. She lays him on the bed and proceeds to take his clothes off. Alyssa kisses Trey’s motionless body passionately as she lives out her deluded fantasy. She knows what she’s doing is wrong but it feels so good. The feeling of his body on hers is too much for her to control. She let out a moan that travels through the small apartment. Moments later the bedroom door begins to creep open. Alyssa jumps up to turn her young daughter away but Amanda’s eyes light up as she sees Trey lying unconscious in her mother‘s bed. She runs to him tugging on his shirt.
Amanda: (Crying) What did you do to him? Wake up Trey!
Alyssa: Go to your room now!
Trey starts regaining conscious while Amanda is crying over him. He sits up looking around but is too weak to stand. Alyssa grabs Amanda and locks her in her bedroom. She walks back to her room and notices that Trey is sitting up. He has her phone and is calling Melody to come get him. Alyssa tries to take the phone but its too late.
Alyssa: You can call your girlfriend cause you already made love to me.
Trey: No, I didn’t touch you.
Alyssa: What is she going to think when she finds you half naked in my bed?
(Trey grabs his clothes and tries to get up. Alyssa is smirking at his failed attempts.)
Alyssa: Why don’t you come back to bed?
Trey: You’re crazy.
Alyssa: I’m crazy about you!
Melody finds the house and is banging on the door until Alyssa opens it. She walks in and see Trey putting his clothes on. You can see her heart breaking on her face.
Alyssa: You can have him back now.
Melody looks at Trey with so much disappointment in her eyes. She turns back to the door to leave but Alyssa is muttering smart remarks under her breath. Melody stops and drops her purse.
Alyssa: What you gonna do?
Melody stares her down as she walks closer to her. Alyssa charges at her reaching for her hair and Melody swings and hits her right in the nose. Blood starts gushing from Alyssa’s nose and is everywhere. Alyssa falls to the ground instantly. Melody walks over to Trey and tries to help him up. While she helping him get his stuff, Alyssa gets back up and comes after Melody again. Alyssa grabs Melody by the neck and is choking her. Melody is gasping for breathe trying to get Alyssa off of her. Melody head buts Alyssa in the nose and she looses the grip from her throat. Melody grabs Alyssa by the hair and punches her repeatedly in the face. Melody gets up and goes back over to Trey and tells him to hurry up. Trey tells Melody that Amanda is locked in her room and where the key is to let her out. Melody unlocks the door and Amanda is crying in the corner.
Melody: Are you ok?
Amanda: (Crying) My mommy hurt Trey!
Melody: He’s fine. Do you have someone you can stay with for tonight?
Amanda: My Grandmother lives a few blocks away from here.
Melody: Get your stuff and I’ll take you there.
Amanda: Where is my mommy?
Melody: She needs to go to the hospital.
Melody calls an ambulance for Alyssa and takes Amanda to her Grandmother’s house. Melody took Trey back to his mother’s house.
Trey: Aren’t you going to say anything?
Melody: What’s the point?
Trey: I didn’t have sex with her, She drugged me. I’m sorry you had to come get me.
Melody pulls the car over and looks at Trey. She’s so mad she slaps him.
Trey: I deserved that.
Melody: Why didn’t you just stay with me? Then none of this would’ve happened. Why can’t you see how much I love you?
All Trey can say is that he’s sorry. He slumps down in the passenger seat and stares out of the window. Melody pulls up to April’s house and parks.
Melody: I’ll take you to get your car in the morning.
Trey: Thank you. Can you come in with me?
Trey: I need you.
Melody gets out of the car and walks with him to the doorstep. Trey unlocks the door and walks in. April and Troy are sitting on the sofa waiting for him.
April: Baby, are you ok? Why didn’t you answer your phone? We’ve been so worried about you.
Trey: I’m fine momma.
April: Hi, Melody. How are you?
Melody: I’m fine momma April.
Troy: Can we talk about what happened earlier?
Trey: I guess.
Troy: I can apologize a million times but its not gonna take away the pain I’ve cause you. I tried to make up for leaving you with helping you pursue your music career. I’ve been your friend but I want to be your father. Please let me be that to you.
Trey: I am who I am because of you. I owe you everything but I don’t know if I can just get over this.
Troy: I’m not asking you to. We can work through this together as a family.
April: Trey, give us a chance to be a family.
Trey looks at his mother and Troy pleading their cases and he doesn’t want to lose either one of them but he doesn’t like the situation. Troy and April are standing with open arms for their son. Trey walks in to their arms open-heartedly.
April: Thank you baby.
Troy: I love you Trey.
Trey: I love you too Dad.
Everyone is teary eyed at this moment. Melody turns to leave but Trey grabs her by the arm.
Trey: Where are you going?
Melody: I’m going home.
Trey: Stay with me.
Melody: Trey, I’m tired of playing games with you. One minute you want me then the next we’re just friends. I can’t take it anymore.
Trey: I’m sorry, I really do love you though. I know I put you through a lot and no matter what you are still there from me. I need you in my life for balance. Everybody runs to me for help and I run to you. We are whatever you want us to be.
Trey kisses Melody passionately and ensures her that he is sincere.
Melody: I love you so much.
Trey: I love you more.
Trey has managed to get past his parents’ mistakes and bring them together as a family. He stopped fighting his feelings for Melody and let nature take its course. When everything seemed to be perfect the door bell rung.
April: Hello, how may I help you?
Officer: We are looking for Melody Carter.
Officer: You are under arrest for the assault of Alyssa Jones.
April: What?! That can’t be right. She didn’t assault anybody.
Officer: Ma’am, please we have to take her in.
The officer puts the handcuffs on Melody and takes her to the police car. Trey walks behind her in disbelief while April is standing on the porch crying. Melody and Trey’s eyes connect for a few seconds before the car pulls off. Trey is mouthing the words I love you as the car goes down the street.
Troy: What’s going on? Why was Melody fighting?
Trey: She was protecting me. Can you drive me down to the police station?
April: Where is your car?
Trey: It’s a long story.
Troy and April drove Trey to the police station. Melody is sitting in a cell when they arrive. Trey signed the necessary paperwork to see Melody. Trey then asks the officer if a bail has been posted for Melody.
Officer: Ms. Jones pressed charges against Ms. Carter. No bail has been set because she’s charged with malicious wounding and child endangerment.
Trey: She’s lying! Alyssa attacked Melody first and Alyssa locked Amanda in her room.
Officer: Are you a witness?
Trey: Yes, I saw everything.
Officer: Are you willing to testify?
Trey: There is no need for a trial.
Officer: Mr. Neverson, are you trying to protect yourself? You and your family are well-known. This doesn’t look good for you having a family friend in this predicament.
Trey: I am fully aware of how this looks. There is more to this than what Alyssa is portraying. Ask Amanda she’s at her Grandmother’s house. She will tell you the truth.
Officer: There is nothing we can do about it unless Mr. Jones decides to drop the charges.
Trey: Can you get her to come down here?
Officer: She’s spending the next couple of days in the hospital thanks to your friend. Nothing can be done until she is released or drops the charges.
Trey turns and looks at Melody. He knows he can’t let her stay in jail but what can he do. The officer tells Trey, Troy, and April that they have to leave. Troy drives them back home while Trey thinks about how to get Melody out of jail. Trey is still unable to drive so he goes to sleep and starts early in the morning. Trey tosses and turns through the night thinking about Melody. He wakes up early and takes Melody’s car and drives to the hospital to see Alyssa.
Trey: What room is Alyssa Jones in?
Nurse: Are you a relative?
Trey: A friend.
Nurse: Sign in.
Nurse: She’s in 209.
Trey: Thank you.
Trey walks around the hospital looking for the room. A young nurse realizes who he is and runs up to him.
Nurse: I love you so much!
Trey: Thank you. Can you help me find room 209?
Nurse: Its right this way. Can you please sign this for me?
Trey signs a piece of paper for her while she shows him to Alyssa’s room.
Nurse: it’s the first door on the left.
Trey: Thank you.
Alyssa is sleeping when Trey walks into the room. Trey eases the door together and walks over to the bed. Trey shakes her to wake her up. Alyssa groans and pushes him away.
Alyssa: What do you want?
Trey: You need to drop the charges against Melody.
Alyssa: Look what she did to me!
Trey: You attacked her first and you lied to the police about Amanda.
Alyssa: That bitch will rot in jail before I drop them.
Trey: Then you will be in the cell beside her. I’m pressing charges against you for drug-facilitated sexual assault.
Alyssa: You wouldn’t!
Trey: You will do more time than she will.
Alyssa: You don’t have any witnesses.
Trey: Are you forgetting about Amanda?
Alyssa: You can’t use my daughter against me!
Trey: You locked her in a room, she would still be there if it wasn’t for us.
Alyssa: I can do whatever I want with her.
Trey: But you can’t with me. Either you drop the charges or I’ll press charges.
Alyssa dropped the charges against Melody and she was released later on that day. Trey rushed to Melody and took her home.
Trey’s problems had come to an end. His family is together and Melody is happy, but he has to go back to his music. Trey had to leave Melody to record his 4th album and prepare for his 1st head-lining tour. They didn’t see each other much because Trey was so busy. Trey tried to stay in touch with her but it wasn’t the same. They both love each other but it was too hard for her to see Trey with other women. She knows they are fans and it's apart of his life but she can't handle it. The separation hurt Treyand he wrote asong about it called "Can't Be Friends". Trey lost the love of his life and his best friend. Trey poured his heart into his music after that and developed the title for his next album.
