Can’t Be Friends
**Love Lost – The Sequel**
“Dammit Trey, how long are you planning to just string me along?” Leasha demanded.
“I hardly call it stringing you along; I mean what do you really expect a nigga to do?”Trey said while he was gathering his things to leave. “You been asking me the same shit for two weeks, and I don’t have an answer for you”
“So what, this year and a half of us ‘messing around’ is not good enough for us to be together?” she exclaimed, following closely behind him. “I don’t know what else you expect from me.” She added throwing her hands on her hips and leaning to one side. Trey loved seeing Leasha upset. Not that he did things intentionally to hurt her; she just had the sexy mad face that Neyo once sang about.
“Leasha look, Imma call you when I get to the crib… we can talk about this-”
“Some other time’, yea I know,” she interjected. “Alright then” she added looking at any and everything in the room she could place her eyes on to avoid looking directly at him. Trey didn’t say anything else before he opened the door and walked out of it. Leasha couldn’t hold in her tears anymore while she stood in the doorway watching Trey get in his car and pull off. As much time as the two spent together, there was no denying that he loved her indeed, but she could not understand what was holding him back from her. Leasha rolled her tear filled eyes, and once Trey was out of sight, she closed the door and headed back into her room.
The year and a half romance that Trey and Leasha shared was all she could dream of and she couldn’t ask for anything better. Well, besides a commitment. The two did everything under the sun together and the chemistry was more than amazing, but being as though she was now twenty six, she felt she was ready for a real commitment and wanted nothing more than that from the man she fell in love with. What made the situation bad was that not only wouldn’t Trey commit, but he wouldn’t even discuss it. Every time Leasha would bring it up, he would change the subject or make up a reason to leave. She knew he wasn’t ready, but why couldn’t he just explain that to her?
Trey looked at himself in the bathroom mirror after washing his face. He just sat and stared at his reflection as if he wanted to ask who the fuck are you? “She gone man, she not coming back Trey,” he said to himself as he blew out his breath reaching for his towel. “Get it together man, it’s been over a year” he continued to talk to himself aloud while he performed his normal routine before getting into bed. When he was clean to his satisfaction, Trey turned the light out in the bathroom and went to his room. He turned on Golden Girl, pulled back the comforter on his king sized bed, and climbed into the center of it lying on his back.
Trey rested his left hand between the pillow and his head while he rubbed his chest and abs with the other. Leasha always rubbed him this way and it helped him sleep at night. Although he wished she was the one doing the rubbing, he knew he was not ready for her to spend the night with him just yet. “Shit,” he said to himself remembering that he told her he would call. I don’t really wanna call her though cause I know she finna curse me out, he thought, but he got out of bed anyway making his way over to the dresser to reach his Blackberry. He scrolled down to the contact labeled “One Love” and pressed the talk button. There was no answer both times he called, and Trey figured that it was probably for the better that they didn’t talk for the night anyway. Trey sent Leasha a text that said
“Love you, goodnight babe”
before getting back to his comfort zone in the bed. He stared at the darkness of the room until Golden Girl put him to sleep.
“So if you wanted to talk to him about it…why didn’t you just answer his call?” Tiff asked sounding more than confused. Leasha invited her sister-in-law over so the two of them could discuss what they were going to do for Trey’s birthday party. Being as though Tiff had been a promotional party planner for the past three years, Leasha could use all the help she could get, not to mention, she needed to vent about Trey, and who better to vent to?
“I don’t know, it’s like, I’m so tired of him acting like this I didn’t know what to say. Plus, I didn’t want him to know that I was crying again,” she confessed. “He did text me and tell me he loved me afterwards though.”
“I bet that made you happy,” Tiff said with the biggest smile she could form.
“No Tiff, that’s the shit that pisses me off. He wanna act like we’re in a relationship when were really not. Then, he don’t even want to talk about why we can’t. I’m ready to be done with this.” She admitted.
“First off, if you were ‘done’ with this, why would we be planning for his birthday which is not until two months from now? Secondly, did you ever think that it could be something with him and not you?”Tiff insisted heading towards the kitchen. “Do you want anything while I’m in here?” she called out.
“No Im okay, thanks,” Leasha hollered back “I don’t know, I think about all the reasons he could be pulling back from me, but I don’t want to guess anymore… I want to know from his mouth,” she continued.
Tiff returns from the kitchen with a glass of champagne and a sandwich. She plopped down on the couch and got comfortable before speaking. “Why don’t you let him know that you have something you want to talk to him about and the two of you go out to dinner or something so that way he can’t run? Once you get him there, let him know how you feel and what you are planning to do if he doesn’t change. If he loves you that much, he will at least do that for you,” Tiff suggested.
“Yea, you’re right… I just don’t want to seem like I’m nagging him,” Leasha said looking down at the floor
“But you don’t find ANY problems with nagging my ass about him though?” she said, causing the two of them to burst out into laughter. “Just do it, that way you got it off your chest and away from my ears…”she added, boosting their laughter once again.
“Mmm mmm mmm, damn baby…Where you learn that at?” Trey asked with a look of confusion on his face.
“I got a few more tricks up my sleeve, if you stick around you will find out…” Leasha teased as she rested her head on Trey’s chest.
“Keep talking like that, we finna go for round three.”Trey said lifting Leasha’s chin until her lips reached his and the shared a kiss. Leasha just stared at him in a daze while contemplating asking him about this dinner.
“Babe, what does your schedule look like?” she asked, breaking eye contact to help with her nerves.
“I’m free for the rest of the week, except for the BET awards, which I been meaning to, ask you if you wanted to join me” He asked, while stroking her hair, pulling it away from her face.
“That is perfect; I was thinking that you and I could spend that whole day together, and after the awards, we can go out to dinner. There have been some things that I wanted to talk to you about anyway…you know…just so that were on the same page.” She said still resting her head on his chest. When Leasha didn’t hear an answer from Trey, she looked up at him to see why he was silent. He was staring straight at her with the most dull look on his face. “What?”She exclaimed, before sitting up and rolling her eyes. “You acting like I asked you for a million dollars or something…what the fuck Trey…” Leasha attempted to get out of the bed when he grabbed her arm….
“LISTEN, you didn’t even give a nigga a chance to answer you before you start showing out…”he said, trying his best not to sound annoyed.
“Well you were just looking at me like you were mad about what I asked you…” Leasha replied.
“Naw baby, I just got some things on my mind, that’s all, we can do that.. We definitely can do that,” Trey agreed. “Now bring that sexy ass back over here…” he said pulling Leasha by her arm back on top of him.
Trey and Leasha had a good day that Friday, and had even better plans for that night. Trey was taking her to the BET awards and couldn’t wait until the “after party”. Arriving at the Red Carpet on Trey’s arm was more than enough to make Leasha feel like she was the best thing in the world. If it wasn’t for paparazzi asking him if she was his girlfriend, and his answer being something like ‘we cool’ or ‘we good friends,’ everything would have been perfect. It’s like every time he said that, her heart felt smaller and smaller.
Leasha got to meet a bunch of celebrities that night. She never had a chance to experience something like that before. Every time Trey would invite her somewhere special like that, she would decline being considerate of Trey’s profession and her own feelings at the same time.
After Trey won the BET award for Best Male Artist, and performed, it was finally time to go. Leasha looked on in delight while Trey said his goodbyes all while she was thinking that the life of a celebrity’s girlfriend would be something that she would love to get used to
“So what you wanna tell me baby?” Trey asked, after placing his order.
“its not what I want to tell you, its more like something I think we should discuss,” Leasha corrected.
“I’m sorry, what should we discuss?” he asked.
“Us”, Leasha said blatantly.
The word ‘us’ rang in Trey’s head like a bell. He knew that this is what she wanted to talk about all along and if it wasn’t for him trying to avoid an argument the other night, he sure would have found a way to avoid this dinner.
“Did you hear me Trey? I want to talk about us…”Leasha repeated.
“I heard you babe,” Trey said never taking his eyes off of the menu. “What do we need to discuss? I mean, I thought everything was cool between us,” he added.
“Well it is, but I want to see what life for us would be like beyond ‘cool’ wouldn’t you? ”she asked not taking her eyes off him. “I mean we been kicking, or whatever you call it, for a long time now..and I was thinking that maybe we could-”
“Hold on baby,” Trey interrupted, “Let me use the bathroom, then we can right back to this. I’m not finna get up once my food get’s here,” he insisted.
Trey made a beeline for the bathroom. When he made his way inside he looked in the mirror again like he did the other night just tell her Trey, tell her about Rena he convinced himself. He had never spoken Serena’s name around Leasha. Although, he tried his best to erase Serena from his thoughts, memories of the two of them haunted him, but not anymore. Trey decided that on this night, he was done with the past and was ready to move on with his future. It was about time. Tell her Trey said one more time to the mirror before washing his hands and leaving the men’s room…
“Oh my God,” the woman yelled while holding her arm out letting the cranberry and vodka roll down it. “You should really watch where you’re going” she continued.
“Damn, baby my bad… I didn’t even see you..I’m sor-”
When the woman looked up, Trey was at a loss for words. It was Serena who he just bumped into. What was he going to do now?
