    Hi, Now I respect Trey Songz as an artist and understand what it is to be a working as a performer. However, Trey Songz I feel that some of your songs lack that background carisma. By this I mean that inner diolague that comes from the soul can only be expressed by nothing other than singing. Then as a result produces what becomes this beauitful art called music. Now-a-days, in my own opion, people can do covers of your songs and even though they may not possess your technique they make it up in life expierence and relationship to your song. Which, to be honest, sounds better than singing a love song about a long relationship when right now your not about the love but rather about the dream. All I'm saying is with your love songs or your music in general I feel like the quality of soul is lacking when before you had it full hearted with passion. I love you trey songz <3.

I have to say though that PPP is my second favorite.

@Josie Aurea Gotta Make days are my favorite too. I think Neyo said it best. Trey had to dumb it down because nobody was paying him any attention. I don't understand why Gotta Make It did not go platinum but it might have been that the larger audience at that time wanted something harder like HipHop and Trey was delivering a more traditional R&B sound that underperformed. He had to do something quick or he would be out. Now he has broadened his image and his audience is more diverse so maybe we can expect something after he gets himself together for the next album. I saw a recent PPP performance where Trey added some lenghty dialogue to the song and it was an AMAZINGLY soulful performance so I know he still got it. I think it has been a struggle to find out what will get him a place in this game and he went for it and was successful. So now that he has everyone's attention maybe he can do more things that will be accepted and profitable at the same time because of the larger audience.

@JIMS I'm glad you see where I'm coming from. Since there isn't any for sure way to get in contact or send Trey Songz a message I made this little discussion thing to put it out there that it is noticeable and does impact the way I want to see him as an artist. He remain a hit single no matter what we think however since we do hear the difference it counts as good feedback to him to be more aware of it before it becomes a habit.

Hi again, Sorry I've been offline. However yes, @ Number1 Hon I do mean the his music that he has came out recently. Even though they are good songs and have that sound that we all like to hear its just not giving me (my own opinion) that extra story line behind the music that makes it so powerful. Whether it be on a CD or one of his live performances in the begging even when he wasn't the "hit" of the song he had a way of standing out and owned that thrive to work hard like in the song 1st Time ft Yung Joc. Also for example the song Gotta Make It Ft Twista, no one without a doubt can say that this guy isn't feeling it and thriving for it in all his heart. Also even if he has more things to worry about now because he is doing better for himself that doesn't give him as an excuse as an artist not to put the same attention that he did before with the elegance of his words in his new songs now.

@JesusIsMySavior Do yo mean songz like Red Lipstick, Blind, Unfortunate, Red Lipstick. I think I am beggining to understand what you mean. Can you list some songz that will give me a better idea because I noticed it too. Maybe this is what Josie means. but I am not sure she is talking about the songz that are definitely R&B or not. Are you talking about the live performances or the CD itself? I don't mind some of the new sounds though because I like Blind and Unfortunate but I only like Red Lipstick when I see him perform iton YouTube. I do think the older albums have a more soulful sound if you all are talking about the style of music. All Music Guide is has a real good breakdown of musical genres and they break down R&B into a lot of sounds. Check it out if you haven''t.

@Numba1Hon:

Yes that is exactly what soul searching does. I think your speculation is pretty much on point. He has stated that in order for him to reach a mass audience he created music that had broader appeal. But I got the feeling that music wasn’t necessarily true to who he was.

@JIMS. I guess soul searching is important because it helps you find yourself and determine if you’re actions match your convictions, etc. In other words are you true to yourself. In my opinion, I think Trey knows exactly what he wants to do, but has a problem remaining centered. This is probably due his excesses of working too hard, not getting enough rest, not getting proper nourishment, not enough preparation, not enough me time, and the added stress of his businesses. It is a lot of responsibility. He may need more discipline like most of us and he may need to change a few things and learn what causes stress and how to manage it. There will always be things he can not control. I think the pressure becomes overwhelming at times and leads him to fear failure and this leads to self-consciousness and less confidence which makes him temporarily lose his ability to do his best. So his performances become forced and somewhat artificial-looking. To overcome this, he probably needs to cut back and get some quality time for himself, make sure he is well fed, well rested, and well prepared and he should cooperate with his managers if they are right. This is just my speculation.

@Josie Aurea. To me, the CBF video was done beautifully and Trey and the model did a magnificent job, but the video did not capture the pain as well because Trey looked comical depicting pain. I cried at first because of a similar relationship, but I ended up laughing at the crazy expressions and that helped me feel better. But the lol helped me feel better. So I love this video and watched it endlessly. I agree about Yo Side of the Bed. It is creatively done, heartfelt and has a positive impact, but some fans still want Trigger and he is first and foremost a bad boy and a menace. So in releasing songs and videos, the label and Trey have to figure what is artistically and commercially viable because the producer and label must recoup expenses and make a profit and I know Trey is not trying to go broke. See my other comments above.

@Josie: Right!

Josie Aurea's picture

You got it ^.^. In my opinion if he took time and got himself together that his music would be so much more effect on his listeners.

Josie: I agree with your assessment of the two videos. So you think Trey needs to do some soul searching? :)

Josie Aurea's picture

Yea , exactly. I see him and sometimes I love it and other times I just wished he took a breathe and did it again. u know?

Don't get me wrong I think the brother is soulful. However, there are times it seems effortless and other times it seems forced. Like when he performs on televised shows there are times he is forcing himself to be soulful. But for some reason I see him on a Ustream singing a song and it seems so effortless. The Ustream he did last week when he sang it really touched my soul.

Well, here's the thing I'm going to be honest with you. I loved the song Can't Be Friends however when he combined it with the video I was a little disappointed. It lacked the personal, painful, and that heartbreak feeling that we all relate to and those moments we go back to when listening to a song like this. However when I was watching the video it felt commercial and lost with all of the "Hollywood" put behind it. For example with his song Your Side of the Bed it was beautifully made. You felt his struggle to let go of his co-actor when she left and after it was over think back on the video and be moved by the pain and future struggles that you knew that character had to face. This is what I mean by soul and art. To be in control of the ability to change peoples mood and impact society is what the main focus should be on. That is why artist get paid. His older songs are full of art and love but now is when he's working so hard when really, its like anything that you try to think to hard on, it looses its ease and quality because the beauty of music is to make it all seem everyday and natural.

Overall what I'm saying is that what Trey Songz's new goal should be is to be that artist he dreamed of being when he was younger and not loose that personal relationship with his art. All of this will make him stand out and later on pro long his career instead of getting molded into the lights.

@josie and @JesusIsMySavior. Can you list a few songz that you feel are more soulful. On PPP, I think Can't be Friends and the Pleasure interlude are the most soulful. Also, I Refuse which is old but relatively newly released. Which soulful sounds did he currently make or previously make that you feel are the most soulful and which do you feel are the least soulful? This would give everyone a better feel for what you mean so we can discuss this. Include mixtape songz too.
