Singer Trey Songz, whose star rose this past year with the R&B chart-topping smash "I Invented Sex" and other hits, says he wants to continue building on his momentum with new material.
Songz is gearing up to release his new album "Passion, Pain and Pleasure" on Sept. 14. But until his release, he'll introduce some of the new album's songs during his upcoming concert tour, which kicks off Friday.
"It was something missing for me. I needed something more," Songz said in a recent interview. "No matter how much you love the songs. I need something new."
Four of his songs, including "Say Aah" and "Neighbors Know My Name," reached the top 10 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart. His gold-selling album "Ready," which was released last year, helped him win BET's best male R&B artist this year.
But the 25-year-old Songz says he needs to produce more than one successful album to be considered in the same class as his idols — singers R. Kelly and Usher.
"This is a competition," he said. "No matter how much I look up to Usher and R. Kelly, it's something we all want to be the best at. But I can't control what they do. I have to outdo me."
Singer Keri Hilson isn't worried about Songz being just a "one-CD hit wonder," because of his strong vocal ability paired with his physical appeal to his increasing female fan base.
"He won women's hearts," Hilson said. "His music has always been great. But people are more aware of him now because of his sex appeal. That will help him move forward."

Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj recently dropped the rollicking, bass-heavy collaboration "Bottoms Up" and the stars wasted no time hitting the web to chat about how the duo hooked up. Hours after sites posted the song from Songz' upcoming Passion, Pain & Pleasure album, the singer spoke directly to fans on Tuesday from his Ustream page about the track. After conferencing in Minaj, who was at work in the studio, they broke down the whirlwind creation of the song.
"I'm in L.A. for BET [Awards] weekend, I'm working on a couple records, and I do this song called 'Red Lipstick,' and then I do 'Bottoms Up' the next day," Trey recalled of his recording session. "I hit Nicki and I'm like, 'Man, I've got these two incredible records, I think one of them is gonna be my first single, and I need you to do it. Can you come this weekend? Can you come down?'
"I stayed a couple extra days and she came through," he said. "Two, three days later I got a verse back that was just stupid." Songz then addressed the MC directly and said, "I fell in love with you. When I heard the verse, I was like, 'Oh my s---, I love her. She killed it.' "
Minaj chimed in and noted that fans had been waiting for the stars to team up. "Every day, people say, 'When you gonna collaborate with Trey?' For some strange reason they wanted to see that collaboration," Minaj said. "So, when you hit me, I was very excited. I just thought, 'This is our time.' "

Trey Songz enjoyed the biggest year of his career in 2009. Now, he's touring with two of the biggest rappers in the game, Jay-Z and Young Jeezy. The Blueprint 3 tour stops in New Orleans tonight, and Atlanta and Greensboro, N.C., over the weekend before hitting New York City's Madison Square Garden on March 2.
A few weeks before the outing kicked off, Trey spoke to VIBE about his major look. "I actually had a couple tour proposals, and this one was in the best alignment with what I have going on," he said. "My 2009 career path was very urgent and very full, and I think the Blueprint 3 tour is very urgent as well, diverse crowd. And you know Jay said he need me to bring the ladies out. He got no girls."
All jokes aside, Trey always performs well vocally but admits his showmanship on stage could use some tweaking—"My actions, just demanding the stage and demanding the audience's attention," said the singer. "Entertaining is a craft and there's no one way to do it. There's the way that suits you as an artist and I'm still exploring that."

Trey Songz is a few days away from gracing the stage of the BP3 Tour with Jay-Z and Young Jeezy and we're wondering how he's preparing for the tour.
Trey's musical footprint goes back to his "Prince of Virgina" days where his mixtapes gained him notoriety for playfully matching wits with R. Kelly in 2005 during his "Trapped In The Closet" phenomenon. Three albums later, he's grown into a heart throb where his sensual creativity in Ready has charted success with hits "Say Aah", "LOL :-)", "Successful", and "I Invented Sex."
It's obvious Trey has a lot to offer in his career, and he's excited and ready to show you fans what he's made of. We spoke to Trey to find out how he's preparing to work with Jay-Z and Young Jeezy once the tour kicks off, working with Drake, and a few other things.

It's 1:00 in the afternoon and R&B singer Trey Songz is doing double duty—taking care of business during a Jet magazine photo shoot in New York City. Under the intense lights, styled in an off-white jacket and tuxedo pants, Trey is seated in an oversized brown chair and the photographer asks him to pose as if he’s talking on his phone. Trey leans into his BlackBerry and starts chatting while his left hand is busy tapping his iPhone (Yes, he has two phones. ‘Don’t you?’ he asks). Read more in JET!
And don't forget, Trey's Jet Cover hits newsstands on Monday, so make sure you pick your copy up to get the full lowdown on Trey!
